You must obtain a Nevada contractors license in order to conduct business in Nevada. Any business or individual who constructs, alters, repairs, improves, moves, wrecks or demolishes any building or other structure, highway, road, railroad, or performs excavation or specialty work in the State of Nevada must be licensed by the Nevada State Contractors Board. Contractors, including subcontractors, or specialty contractors must be licensed before submitting bids. Licenses may be issued to individuals, partnerships, corporations, joint ventures or limited liability companies (LLCs).
Do you have the required trade experience to qualify to take the Nevada state contractor license examination in your trade classification(s)?
The Nevada State Contractors Board requires that an applicant for a state contractor’s license provide evidence of at least four (4) years experience as a journeyman, foreman, supervising employee or contractor in the field of work for which a Nevada state contractor license is being sought, and the four (4) years experience must have occurred within the ten (10) years immediately preceding filing of an application.
The Nevada State Contractors Board also requires four (4) reference certificates that must be completed by someone who has first-hand knowledge of and can verify your work experience in your trade (e.g. an architect, engineer, employer, other journeyman, customer, etc.).
If you don’t have the full four (4) years of required experience, training received in a program offered at an accredited college or university may be used to satisfy a portion of the required experience. The state of Nevada does not recognize contractor licenses issued by other states, but does have limited reciprocal agreements with Arizona, Utah and California for the Nevada trade examinations (excluding electrical and plumbing trades). The trade qualifier for a Nevada state contractor license must have taken and passed an equivalent examination in the qualifying state, and must be have been licensed and in good standing for at least five (5) years out of the last seven (7) years.
The Nevada State Contractors Board requires each applicant for a Nevada contractor license to pass the Nevada Contractor Management Survey Examination (general business and law), and the respective Trade Examination specific to the trade classification of the state contractor license for which you are applying. The American Contractors Institute prepares you to PASS the Nevada Contractor Management Survey Examination and your respective Trade Examination(s). The Nevada State Contractors Board issues state contractor licenses for separate trades or fields in the construction industry according to the following classifications:
